~ Double Tail ~

I have made punnet squares below showing the 4 different possibilities for breeding the Double Tail gene. I have also given a photo reference for those of you not familiar with punnet squares. This is the most simple gene to work with as far as who will be, who will not be, how many, so on and so forth. I did not make a true Single Tail bred to another true Single Tail example because it throws all Single Tails, no possibilities of Double Tails other than an odd mutation perhaps.

dt ST/dt dt/dt
dt ST/dt dt/dt

DTM   STF (dt geno)

50% Double Tails

50% Single Tails (carry DT)

You will yield approximately 50% Single Tails that carry the Double Tail gene and approx. 50% true Double Tails. This is my favorite combination because all of the babies will at least carry the Double Tail gene which provides wider, fuller finnage. This way you have both Single Tails and Double Tails to choose from.

  Single tail
True Double Tail ST ST
dt ST/dt ST/dt
dt ST/dt ST/dt

DTM   STF

100% Single Tails (DT geno)

You will yield 100% Single Tails that carry the Double Tail gene and will not have any true double tails in this spawn. If you were to breed a male and female from this spawn, you would have the following results.

  Single tail carrying Double Tail
Single tail carrying Double Tail ST dt
ST ST/ST ST/dt
dt ST/dt dt/dt

+ =
STM (dt geno)   STF (dt geno)

25% Double Tails

50% Single Tails (carry DT)

25% Single Tails

You will yield 25% true Double Tails, 50% Single Tails that carry the Double Tail gene and 25% Single Tails that do NOT carry the Double Tail gene. The bad thing about this pairing is that there is really no positive way to differentiate between the Single tails that DO carry Double Tail and the ones that do NOT carry it. You can guess, but you can never be positive.

  True Double Tail
True Double Tail dt dt
dt dt/dt dt/dt
dt dt/dt dt/dt

+ =
DTM   DTF

100% Double Tails

You will yield 100% Double Tails. This one is great if you want all Double Tails, but you should keep in mind that 100% Double Tail spawn will be shorter, stockier and more prone to deformities. A Double Tail x Double Tail cross is not wise unless you have two double tails with long bodies. Double Tails will most times have a shorter body and breeding two short bodied double tails will result in even shorter bodied offspring. I always like to have Single Tails as well, especially Single Tails that carry Double Tail.
